Alpha Mummy - Times Online - WBLG
Alpha Mummy is the blog for mums who work, used to work, or want to go back to work one day.

Bad toy of the week: Her first Ouija board

Ouija Big

As the parent of a 7-year-old girl, I have had to develop a tolerance of pink plastic objects. Personally, I find that they offend both my aesthetic sense and my notion of gender stereotyping. But we have to live and let live, don’t we?

If some people care for garish pink tat, who am I to cavil and carp? If some of those people live in my house, all the more reason for me to find it in myself to put up with their predilections.

But here is where I draw the line.

Toys R Us really are selling a pink Ouija board. For girls aged, it says on their site, 8-14 years.

Complete with planchette, and the legend 'Ask the questions girls want to know'

"Pink OUIJA Board predicts the future" the advertising copy runs, "Who will call you next? Will you be famous? Who wants to trade places with you? All these questions and more can be answered with the mystifying OUIJA Board"

Because they're the questions girls want to know, aren't they?

Now, I have no religious faith but I’m pretty sure that necromancy, even cutesy necromancy, is forbidden in the Bible. Chances are it’s proscribed in most other religious texts too.

If it's OK for certain faiths, do let me know in the comments. I'm interested in stuff like that.

As an individual I find it extremely improbable that the spirits of the dead migrate to some parallel but intersecting dimension from where they can only communicate with us through the medium of parlour games.

As the parent of a child just entering the target demographic for this item I am entirely appalled that such a product exists.

Religious people will likely hate it for the reasons given above, scientific rationalists will very probably hate it for the reasons given just below that, and anyone falling outside those two broad demographics will (one might hope) hate it because it’s about six different kinds of wrong.

Did Hasbro, the manufacturers, not focus group this item before they tooled up their factories to produce it?

Can it be real? Or am I the victim of some elaborate hoax? I rather hope so.

well unfortunatly they have been selling these damn things to kids for years, hence the reason why my kids won't ever touch one,

i think if i remember many years ago when my youngest asked for one, i exploded in the middle of the shop, she never asked again, no one argued with me in the shop either, much to my dissapiontment, i have calmed down as i have got older, :D :D honest!   oh! unless i'm driving

Stan you can have a pink one like all the other boys,

I have had to put right so many messes caused by these in healthy adults that it doesnt even bear thinking about the psychological repercussions of impressionable young children or teenagers using them! Its a scary thought, I have seen some very disturbing cases over the last couple of years and if I caught any of my children or friends children thinking about a ouija board I would be very upset and give them a lot of reasons as to why they shouldnt. I dont have a problem with them in experienced hands but to think of 8 year olds using one makes me shudder.
